Soeng Joeng Toi (SJT) will host the opening of Synnika's upcoming one-year-program at their community space in Guangzhou. Visitors can physically join the event on site at SJT (address: No. 3-30 Xiaoyuanbei Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou). As we are not able to open our space in Frankfurt, due to the current health crisis, Synnika will additionally provide the infrastructure for live participation on this website. The event begins with the opening of visual Conversions by the Realism Working Group at SJT in Guangzhou and the Mothers of Ultra at Synnika in Frankfurt/Main - we are looking forward to your visit, online or on site in Guangzhou!
Conversion
In urban planning Conversion means the transformation of buildings and areas, in IT: the change of a data format, in the armaments industry: the shift towards civilian production. In March 2020, employees of General Electric walked out against their company, demanding to switch its aircraft engine facilities to the production of medical fans, instead of firing the employees as planned. Similar developments were visible around the globe in the following weeks and months. Demands for conversion are increasing in all areas of life.
The future of »Remote Working«, beyond the current pandemic crisis, renders significant amounts of work and office space superfluous. Companies plan to balance stagnating and shrinking margins of profit by saving costs for wages and work space. At the same time, residential rents continue to rise. In this context the conversion of office space beyond the traditional housing typologies is a realist option for the creation of urgently needed living space in urban and peri-urban areas.
Synnika has evolved from the direct engagement with the drastic urban developments of recent years. Our space is located in the ground-floor of the NIKA.haus, a former office and store building at the intersection of Niddastrasse and Karlstraße in Frankfurt. Through the initiative of its residents the building was collectivized and integrated into the trans-regional Syndicate of Tenements. Together with our neighbours we work against the general gentrification and crowding-out processes within Frankfurt's diverse Central Station district.
The Conversion installation at SJT in Guangzhou is the starting point of a one-year program with the same name, taking place at Synnika from December 07, 2020 to January 15, 2021. It comprises alternating contributions starting with artist and fashion designer Miao & ChaoCoop’s Mothers of Ultra, followed by artist collective Blockadia*Tiefsee, visual artists Vanessa A. Opoku and Nicholas Warburg, as well as the electronica music label Mille Plateaux. Further details will be announced during our opening event taking place at SJT in Guangzhou as well as via live stream video chat available on www.synnika.space.

Besucher*innen sind herzlich eingeladen an der Veranstaltung vor Ort im SJT physisch teilzunehmen (Adresse: No.3-30 Xiaoyuanbei Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou). Da wir unseren Raum in Frankfurt aufgrund der aktuellen Gesundheitskrise nicht öffnen können, wird Synnika die Infrastruktur für eine zusätzliche Live-Teilnahme auf dieser Website bereitstellen. Die Veranstaltung beginnt mit der Eröffnung visueller Konversionen der Realism Working Group im SJT in Guangzhou und der Mothers of Ultra im Synnika in Frankfurt/Main - wir freuen uns auf Ihren Besuch, online oder vor Ort in Guangzhou!
Konversion
In der Stadtplanung bedeutet Konversion die Umwandlung von Gebäuden und Flächen, in der Informatik: die Änderung eines Datenformats, in der Rüstungsindustrie: die Neuausrichtung auf zivile Produktion. Im Rahmen der aktuellen Corona-Pandemie forderten die Mitarbeiter*innen von General Electric im März 2020 ihr Unternehmen auf, seine Fabrik für Flugzeugtriebwerke auf medizintechnische Ventilatoren umzustellen, anstatt die Angestellten wie geplant zu entlassen. Ähnliche Entwicklungen waren in den folgenden Wochen und Monaten rund um den Globus zu beobachten. Konversionsforderungen nehmen zu, in allen Bereichen des Lebens.
Die Zukunft von "Remote Working" wird, jenseits der aktuellen Pandemiekrise, einen erheblichen Umfang an Arbeit und Büroraum überflüssig machen. Unternehmen planen, stagnierende und schrumpfende Gewinnspannen durch Einsparungen bei Löhnen und Arbeitsräumen auszugleichen. Gleichzeitig steigen die Wohnungsmieten kontinuierlich an. In diesem Zusammenhang ist die Umnutzung von Büroflächen, jenseits der traditionellen Wohntypologien, eine realistische Option für die Schaffung von dringend benötigtem Wohnraum in städtischen und stadtnahen Gebieten.
Synnika ist entstanden aus der direkten Auseinandersetzung mit den drastischen urbanen Entwicklungen der letzten Jahre. Der Raum befindet sich im Erdgeschoss eines ehemaligen Büro- und Geschäftsgebäudes an der Kreuzung Niddastraße und Karlstraße in Frankfurt. Durch die Initiative seiner Bewohner*innen wurde das Gebäude kollektiviert und in das NIKA.haus umgewandelt, als ein integriertes Projekt des überregionalen Mietshäuser Syndikats. Gemeinsam mit unseren Nachbar*innen wirken wir den allgemeinen Gentrifizierungs- und Verdrängungsprozessen im vielfältigen Frankfurter Bahnhofsviertel entgegen.
Die Eröffnung der Installation bei SJT in Guangzhou ist der Ausgangspunkt des Jahresprogramms Konversion, das vom 07. Dezember 2020 bis zum 15. Januar 2022 im Synnika stattfindet. Es umfasst abwechselnde Beiträge, beginnend mit den Mothers of Ultra, gefolgt vom Künstler*innenkollektiv Blockadia*Tiefsee, sowie den bildenden Künstler*innen Vanessa A. Opoku und Nicholas Warburg und dem Electronica-Musiklabel Mille Plateaux. Weitere Einzelheiten werden während unserer Eröffnungsveranstaltung in Guangzhou und per Live-Stream und Video-Chat auf www.synnika.space bekannt gegeben.
