Achronia is an audio-visual framework in which time does not exist in and of itself, but emerges from reciprocal effects: from lying on the water and looking at the sky, tapping on a surface, to the time of real-time governance, where faith in progress is stumbling across economic stagnation, currently tipping over into apocalyptic jargon. While fundamental physics sees time as relational, emergent, depending on respective material conditions, the dictates of economic efficiency welcome these polychronic realities with a synchronized diversity of exploitation: from the real-time speculation on future probabilities, and the on-call idleness of the entrepreneurial home office, to the just-in-time surveillance of waged labor. The Masters' Clocks generated progress, until reality ruined its balance sheets to an extent that, with generative AI, an old cybernetic real-time promise had to be reborn — one designed to eclipse all previous superlatives. In Achronia, time must be reproduced, re-measured, re-assessed, constantly; the more expensive and granular its machine pace, the more detailed, smoother and sensitive its topography. The logic of real-time navigation translates the world into harmonizing, deductive metrics, vectors, and patterns to render the Achronian real manageable.
In the transition from the ecology of mean stability to a future of standard deviation, we are left with little choice but to build from the non-standard polychronicles of this very shift: the stability of the clock, that mediated social classes since the advent of the black death in 14th-century Europe, is basically disappearing. For most it never was a source of stability, but merely of discipline. When the introduction of public mechanical clocks on church towers and mayor's offices was a functional reminder that the world of efficiency, measurement and economic value production is inclusive to everyone and everything, the owners of capital today are marketing the opposite: the dawn of machine apocalypse, finally rendering human labor costs superfluous, once and for all.
In Achronia »It's not the notes you play, it's the notes you don't play.« This phrase associated with Jazz music counts just as much for its rhythms of time, including ours, as installed at Synnika, with further contributions to be announced.
