Scenes Unsighted: The Autonomous Zones of Queer/Feminist Art and Cultural Production

Histories of North American feminist, queer, and queer feminist art can be traced in relation to a history of the institutions, organisations, collectives, and structures that have helped to secure and legitimise feminist and queer art practices. In this talk Erin Silver considers how the specificities of place, as well as space, contribute to historical understandings of feminist, queer, and queer feminist cultural production. She interrogates the shift in meaning that has occurred over the last fifty years around the word ‘alternative,’ especially as it relates to artist and subcultural communities, from its more literal definition—alternative as ‘another possibility’—to alternative in the radical emancipatory sense. Rather than ‘building’ a feminist or queer art history, Silver examines how feminist and queer art histories have come to be built in relation to the sites that house feminist and queer artistic activity. In asking how these spaces hold up historically in the present day context, she puts them into dialogue with contemporary queer feminist initiatives and interventions, showing how queer feminism can work to secure these spaces and to critically engage their histories.

Erin Silver is a historian of queer and feminist art, visual culture, performance, and activism, and an Assistant Professor of Art History and Curatorial Studies at the University of British Columbia. She is the author of Taking Place: Building Histories of Queer and Feminist Art in North America (Manchester University Press, forthcoming 2023), and co-editor (with Amelia Jones) of Otherwise: Imagining Queer Feminist Art Histories (Manchester University Press, 2016). She has curated exhibitions at the FOFA Gallery (Concordia University, Montreal), the ArQuives (Toronto), and the Doris McCarthy Gallery (University of Toronto Scarborough). Silver’s writing has appeared in C Magazine, CAA Reviews, Canadian Art, Ciel Variable, Prefix Photo, Fuse Magazine, Momus, Performance Matters, as well as in various exhibition catalogues in the areas of Canadian photography and queer and feminist art.

Die Geschichte(n) feministischer, queerer und queer-feministischer Kunst aus Nordamerika können in Bezug auf Institutionen, Organisationen, Kollektive und Strukturen geschrieben werden, mittels derer feministische und queere Kunstpraktiken gesichert und legitimisiert wurden. In ihrem Vortrag beschäftigt sich Erin Silver mit der Frage, wie die Spezifik von Räumen und Orten zum historischen Verständnis von feministischer, queerer und queer-feministischer Kulturproduktion beigetragen hat. Sie untersucht, wie sich die Bedeutung des Begriffs ‚alternativ‘ in den letzten fünfzig Jahren vom buchstäblichen ‚eine andere Möglichkeit‘ zu einer radikal emanzipatorischen Lesart verschoben hat – insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit subkulturellen und künstlerischen Gemeinschaften. Anstatt eine feministische oder queer-feministische Kunstgeschichte zu ‚bauen‘ erforscht Silver, wie feministische und queer-feministische Kunstgeschichte(n) in Relation zu Orten ‚gebaut‘ werden, in denen feministische und queere Kunstaktivitäten stattfinden. Indem sie danach fragt, wie diese historischen Räume im heutigen Kontext weiterleben, schafft sie einen Dialog mit zeitgenössischen queer-feministischen Initiativen und Interventionen. Auf diese Weise wird sichtbar, wie queerer Feminismus dazu beitragen kann, diese Räume zu sichern und eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit ihren Geschichten anzuregen.

Erin Silver ist Historikerin queerer und feministischer Kunst, Visueller Kultur, Performance und Aktivismus sowie Assistenz-Professorin für Kunstgeschichte und Kuratorische Studien an der University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Kanada). Sie ist die Autorin von Taking Place: Building Histories of Queer and Feminist Art in North America (Manchester University Press, erscheint 2023), und Herausgeberin von Otherwise: Imagining Queer Feminist Art Histories (mit Amelia Jones, Manchester University Press, 2016). Sie hat Ausstellungen an der FOFA Gallery (Concordia University, Montreal), den ArQuives (Toronto) und der Doris McCarthy Gallery (University of Toronto Scarborough) kuratiert.
