Blurry Gazes

The exhibition Blurry Gazes follows the interdisciplinary research work of Anna Boldt and Mathias Weinfurter, which the duo began in Colombia under the title "Miradas Borrosas" in 2019 and continued in the context of their residency at the NIROX Foundation (2022-23) in the Republic of South Africa. The central exploration of the artistic research addresses questions of private and public space, functions and mechanisms of security architectures, and examines their relationship to social structures that produce poverty and exploitation under the sign of capitalism. Like through a magnifier, Blurry Gazes thus functions as a mediator that not only focuses on individual lived realities, but aims at global comparability. The exhibition at Synnika shows in the form of a video installation by Boldt and Weinfurter the results of the research, which were realized with photography, film, and interviews, and contextually complements them with sculptural work.

In 2019 Boldt and Weinfurter realized the experimental research and art project Miradas Borrosas (en. Blurry Gazes) in the Colombian village of Ambalema. The starting point was the footage that Google had taken on site six years earlier for its online service Google Street View (GSV). Until then, the residents had no knowledge of their existence and public accessibility, as the village does not have permanently installed internet access. After an extensive engagement with the inhabitants through the confrontation with the photos, their experiences and impressions, a participatory intervention and a performance was realized on site. The interventions resulted in a film that was shown as part of a spatial installation.

 

During their residency at the NIROX Foundation (www.niroxarts.com) from December 2022 to January 2023, Boldt and Weinfurter realized Blurry Gazes to allow a comparison of impressions. The research again started with a series of photographs, stitched together on GSV, of various locations in the region surrounding NIROX, taken at various times. Whilst in residence, the duo conducted research on-site, meeting those captured by GSV and exploring the site-specific conditions of the proximate (yet economically disparate) areas of Nietgedacht, Roodeport, and Krugersdorp. The result is a portrait of these respective communities juxtaposed with their online representation, raising a number of questions about visibility, representation, agency, surveillance, and land in South Africa.

Anna Boldt lives and works in Cologne. She completed her cultural studies at the University of Bonn in 2017. She mainly focused on language, literature and cultural aspects of Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Mathias Weinfurter lives and works in Cologne. He studied Fine Arts, majoring in Sculpture at the Offenbach University of Art and Design and Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem.

Synnika is located on the groundfloor of NIKA.Haus. The entrance has a 20 cm high step. A mobile ramp is available. Unfortunately, the toilet is not accessible.

 

Die Ausstellung Blurry Gazes schließt an die interdisziplinäre Recherchearbeit von Anna Boldt und Mathias Weinfurter an, die das Duo unter dem Titel "Miradas Borrosas" bereits 2019 in Kolumbien begann und im Rahmen ihrer Residency in der NIROX Foundation in Südafrika (2022-23) fortsetzten. Die zentrale Auseinandersetzung der künstlerischen Recherche setzt an Fragen des privaten und öffentlichen Raums, Funktionen und Mechanismen von Sicherheitsarchitekturen an und untersucht deren Verhältnis zu gesellschaftlichen Strukturen, die im Zeichen des Kapitalismus Armut und Ausbeutung produzieren. Wie unter einem Brennglas fungiert Blurry Gazes so als Mediator, der nicht nur individuelle Lebensrealitäten in den Fokus stellt, sondern auch auf globale Vergleichbarkeit abzielt. Die Ausstellung bei Synnika zeigt in Form einer Videoinstallation von Boldt und Weinfurter die Ergebnisse der Recherche, die mit Fotografie, Film und Interviews umgesetzt wurden und ergänzt sie kontextuell um eine bildhauerische Arbeit.

2019 realisierten Anna Boldt und Mathias Weinfurter in dem kolumbianischen Dorf Ambalema das experimentelle Forschungs- und Kunstprojekt Miradas Borrosas (dt. verschwommene Blicke). Ausgangspunkt waren die Aufnahmen, die das Unternehmen Google sechs Jahre zuvor vor Ort für seinen Online-Dienst Google Street View (GSV) erstellt hatte. Bislang wussten die Bewohner:innen nichts von deren Existenz und öffentlicher Zugänglichkeit. Das Dorf verfügt über keinen fest installierten Internetzugang. Nach einer ausführlichen Auseinandersetzung mit den Bewohner:innen über die Konfrontation mit den Fotos, ihre Erfahrungen und Eindrücke, wurde vor Ort eine partizipatorische Intervention und eine Performance realisiert. Die Interventionen resultierten in einem Film, der als Teil einer Rauminstallation gezeigt wurde.

 

Während ihrer Residenz in der NIROX Foundation (www.niroxarts.com) von Dezember 2022 bis Januar 2023 realisierten Boldt und Weinfurter Blurry Gazes, um einen Vergleich der Eindrücke zu ermöglichen. Ausgangspunkt waren wiederum die Fotos, die zu verschiedenen Zeiten für GSV in der Umgebung von NIROX aufgenommen wurden. Während ihres Aufenthalts recherchierte das Duo vor Ort, traf sich mit den von GSV erfassten Personen und untersuchte die ortsspezifischen Bedingungen der nahegelegenen (und doch wirtschaftlich ungleichen) Gebiete Nietgedacht, Roodeport und Krugersdorp. Das Ergebnis ist ein Porträt dieser jeweiligen Gemeinschaften, das ihrer Online-Darstellung gegenübergestellt wird und eine Reihe von Fragen zu Sichtbarkeit, Darstellung, Handlungsfähigkeit, Überwachung und Land in Südafrika aufwirft.

Anna Boldt lebt und arbeitet in Köln. Sie schloss 2017 ihr Studium der Kulturwissenschaften an der Universität Bonn ab. Ihr Schwerpunkt lag dabei auf Sprache, Literatur und kulturellen Aspekten Lateinamerikas und Südostasiens. 

Mathias Weinfurter lebt und arbeitet in Köln. Er studierte Bildende Kunst mit dem Schwerpunkt Bildhauerei an der Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach und der Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem.
